Teaching Philosophy

Learning is a lifelong endeavor that I whole-heartedly encourage.

Gaining and cultivating a talent builds confidence and self esteem.  It is my goal that through our focused private lessons, students will feel empowered to pursue all of their life goals. Personal growth is encouraged through learning music and our time working together, resulting in the best person he/she can be.

As a teacher, I am a motivator and promote a strong work ethic. One of the studio’s goals is for every student to have small improvements each week. More importantly, each person will be encouraged to find motivation within themselves as they see the fruits of their labor. It is often said that action precedes motivation. Understanding their own thought process when it comes approaching the flute is essential to working through challenges, which I will guide them through. This applies to flute and extends beyond music into school, work, and daily life. Together we can remove any barriers that stand in the way of their goals. It is my hope that they find inspiration in my energetic and personable approach.

I aspire to be a role model for each student, and I greatly enjoy building relationships with them. I take it upon myself to be their musical guide and mentor. I do what I can to put students at ease through humor and warmth. Lessons are most productive when we are comfortable with each other. Participating in studio events outside of lessons (trips to masterclasses, professional performances, studio parties, etc.) is a great way to get to know each other and the rest of the students. It is personally fulfilling to watch each musician grow their talent and personality.

Duets with student Clarabelle

As each person is different, I adapt myself to be what he/she needs at the current moment in their life and meet them where they are in their musical education. Lessons are tailored individually to each student since they all have varying areas of strengths and weaknesses, which we will identify together through recordings of their own playing. Assignments are given according to the student’s specific needs. Together, we will set high yet attainable goals. Though high standards are set, mistakes are expected and not shamed, as understanding those mistakes is how we can improve. Questions are encouraged and happily answered along the way. They should leave each lesson with a resolve to improve. When students find themselves stuck, we will renew their energy and passion for learning and playing music by switching our focus to playing and listening to the things from which they get the most joy.
